Wear shirt wash shirt. Is that not the done thing.

But not always the case in the days when men wore detachable collars. They might've only had the one shirt, which couldn't be washed, dried then ironed from being taken off after work, before the following morning. Hence the detachable collars, which were changed instead of washing the whole shirt.🧐

We are rapidly approaching 2026 not 1826 and now have things like washing machines and tumble driers.😉

But not everyone has a washing machine, or a tumble dryer! And they certainly didn't have such things in those detachable collar days!🫡

When detachable collars were worn most people got clean in a tin bath in front of the fire if they were lucky🤣 Now we have things called showers and surprisingly our standards of hygiene have improved.
But maybe that hasn’t got to Lancashire yet.😱🤣🤣🤣🤣

Every industrialised town back then had huge chimneys throwing out clouds of thick coal smoke to leave your collar all black.

Depending on the occasion and length of time I've had it on I will sometimes get away with wearing a shirt once and then giving it an iron and popping it back in the wardrobe without washing it. I guess if you wear a vest underneath, use underarm deodorant and don't sweat too much you might get a few days out of a shirt, but with modern washers and dryers there's probably no need for detachable collars anymore. FWIW Accy I'm not keen on the shirts you posted but you can probably carry them off in your own unique way.

Why would you risk folk commenting about your lack of personal hygiene especially when you pride yourself on your personal appearance. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Mmm, remind me again, which six fingered, inbred county do you come from?🤔 🧐 😏

The post by Gunk featuring the Double Two shirts reminded me that when I was schoolboy 1957 - 1969, if the collar on my school shirts wore thin or through my mother used to ‘turn‘ the collar so the shirt looked good once more.

And who remembers the TV ads for Rael Brook shirts with the ditty “Rael Brook poplin, the shirts you don’t iron”

I don't have a washing machine. My flat/kitchen is too small for one, so I go to a nearby laundry once a fortnight, hand washing if I require certain items, in my flat. I sometimes do hand-wash shirts. It's quite easy to do, but wringing them out is difficult. When I hand wash a shirt I'll leave it to drip dry in my shower for a day, Then I'll put it on a coat hanger, over a radiator.
