They arrived yesterday, or should I say I found them, after being lost by Royal Mail. Anyway, I opened them and I think I like them! They fit perfectly and seem quite well made.

Missed out on a pair of Trickers boots at a local chaser as they were too big
; only twenty quid and all they needed was a clean and some dubbin ,seemed really well made and of course can get them re-soled.

Talking of shoes, this fwiw is what the owner of my excellent local outfitters, Alexanders, in Woodbridge Thoroughfare, told me:
Church’s were fine as long as they had a British marketing manager.
When Prada (who have owned them for years) put an Italian in the job, he thought he should make them into an “exclusive luxury brand”, and terminated their agreements with many retailers.
My comment (not his) - if Prada think they can turn Church’s into Lobb, they don’t understand the British shoe market. If Church’s want me to go to a shop in St James’s and pay silly money I will go into Lobb and do that, but not into Church’s.

Whilst I've never bought a pair of Churchs I do rather agree with that. Crocketts are now a pretty brutal £600, albeit are superb. Not at all convinced Church's are better and they are more expensive again, and often not even leather lined. I've only seen Lobbs in the shop window but they are clearly in a different bracket.
I should perhaps admit most of my purchases have been seconds or secondhand so mr Church, or is it Senor Church these days, isn't too concerned about losing my custom

Apparently some Church’s are no longer made in England and are quiet poorly made. I saw a video recently warning people to beware which ones they buy.

I've been in Church's factory, maybe 20 years ago. It was like stepping back in time to 1930.

The people who used to own Church’s own Cheaney. Crockett and Jones are very much still in business, as are Trickers.

Apart from one pair of Poulsen Skone (New & Lingwood) patent leather evening shoes all my shoes are Church’s but they are all “of a certain age”… i.e. from when I could afford them, if I really thought about it. Fortunately they seem to be immortal, even the brown brogues that I used for gardening before I “reprieved” them.
If I ever need a new pair (I’m 73!) it would be between Crockett & Jones, Trickers, and Cheaney.
Incidentally I think that Sacha Baron Cohen’s father, who died in 2016, owned New & Lingwood.
