No, Andy, the start times for 10K Biathlon yesterday won by Neuner were decided by their finishing positions from the 7.5K (?) race at the weekend. Some of the pre-Olympic favourites were already doomed yesterday by starting 2 or 3 minutes behind. One, whose name escapes me, moved from 35th to 6th (or thereabouts) by shooting clear and probably skiing faster than the winner but the handicap was too much to make up.

The first event is the 'sprint'. Only two shoots (one prone, one standing) and athletes set out at intervals. The reason why the next event is called the 'pursuit' is because it is based on the sprint result. It means you have to try and not mess up the first.

There was a small problem in that the sprint was hit by a heavy snow shower, which slowed the later athletes down, but it is part of the sport.

It is not that common that the winner of the sprint wins the pursuit, simply because the pressure is on and they have no-one to judge their initial speed by. Neither male or female pursuit was won by the respective sprint winner.

If you want a level playing field then the 'mass start' is the race for you.

I managed to miss that technicality completely. It does seem a bit rum. Are they awarding one medal for the combination of both events (in which case it would seem fair enough) or one for each, which is barmy. Nonetheless you Magdelena is a whizz on the skis and a pretty good shot too.

One for each which, as you say, makes it a bit rum indeed. A bit like doing well in the 100m on the track meaning you can have a 10 metre start in the 200!

Women's Downhill was some race. The Vonn lady seems to be a different class.

Ben Kilner made it through to the Semi Finals of the Half Pipe, so stoked for him. Thats the last 18, it'll take a good run to make it to the finals though!
