Are the Olympic medals actually made of their respective metals?
The gold is probably 1-atom thick gold-plated, right?

I have in front of me an informative article from Country & Border Life Magazine about the medals (as they were made in Wales by the Royal Mint) which says that the gold medals are a solid silver base with 6 grams of gold plate on. The silver medals are 92.5% silver with the remainder copper and the bronze is 97% copper 2.5% zinc and 0.5% tin.

Apparently the last time solid gold medals were given out was at the 1912 games.

Your useless facts for the day.

Interesting article on Peter Deary, who rides the Derny bike that leads the Keirin, in today's paper.

Here's another question - are the medals stamped with the event the medal was won in?
I thought they were all the same but the rest of the lads thought they were individually stamped.

Amazed that some one hasn't shoved a microphone down the throat of some interviewers or at least chinned one of them. The stupid questions they ask some one, who has just come in second or third and is totally nan tucked, is beyond belive but the prize must go to the person who interviewed the poor fellow who just won bronze in the rowing and was totally gone, the man could hardly stand and here was Redgrave and the reporter trying to speak to him!!.

The total twat, John Inverdale I think it was actually said to one of them at one point as they were practically on their knees and bringing their lungs up

'Come on, you've got to say something'

There the rower was, completely knackered, hardly able to stand, distraught at having just lost and having to have a certain Mr Redgrave to help him which much have made the embarrassment even worse, and this zarking parasite is there harassing them.

Now, I know he has a job to do, but, still, leave off with your stupid soundbite.

Of course, the rowers and Redgrave were obviously too well trained to tell him where to go

I felt for the British chap who lost out during a 400m heat, he apologised for letting everyone down
