I don't mind paying the right price for a decent bike or frame, but is it just me that thinks the price of bikes is getting out of all proportion to what they are.

I have just seen a used 2019 Specialized on Facebook for £6,500 the original price been 12k

£6,500 sounds over the top for a new bike to me never mind second hand.

It's like saying £100k is over the top for a 2nd hand Ferrari that cost £200k new?

It's still only ' a car'.

Yes I think they are crazy but hasn’t stopped me blowing £5000 on an ally frame 😂
Don’t know how they set the prices I mean really it is only a few bits of ally, carbon or ti tubing there can’t be a big manufacturing difference between a generic frame and a high end version. Same as wheels my bike wheels cost more than my car ones and they have much more material, manufacturing and testing behind them

Difference to me though there’s a massive amount of more engineering and material usage in a Ferrari compared to a focus. Now a planetx carbon frame to a specialised frame how much real difference can there be

Yes, fair point. There will be some obviously but in reality not to justify the cost difference. That's why the more expensive you go the laws of diminishing returns come in to play. It's where you pick your own price point is what matters.

Perception of bike pricing seems all out of whack too. To me, 1k is still a fairly significant outlay for a bike and should get you something good.
But yesterday I was reading the Cycling UK mag and I came across an advert by a new manufacturer of "basic town bikes for the budget conscious" and they started at a grand! Later on in the magazine, CUK praised an MTB for being really cheap, and that was 2.5k.

Before getting into cycling last year, my previous bike, bought in the early 2000s, cost me £200 from Halfords. I thought that was a lot of money for a bike until I decided to upgrade last year…..

Yes because they are basically advertising the bikes. In reality a lot of people wont pay anything like that for a bike. Many beginners or people who want a budget bike will only pay the bare minimum. If someone was just wanting a basic run around for errands etc, they would be getting something £250-£350ish if that.

Have you only just noticed ? Bikes have been in that kind of region for years now. It's very much marginal gains. For that price it's going to be a team issue bike you get.
Nobody is making you pay that - a bike half the cost will be almost as good.

You can get a very decent bike from a grand or so.

And just because it's advertised at 6 grand doesn't mean that it will be sold at that price.

A town bike you really wouldn't really want to leave in town (or many I know) and therefore it seems to me not a lot of use.
Unless you sit with it.
Would folks buy a car, drive it into town and then just sit in it and read the paper, invite friends round to the back seat for a coffee?

Just out of curiosity what alloy frame have you bought for 5 grand?
