The only 'award winning' fish and chip shop I can recall was in Lisson Grove, Paddington-ish.

It got quite a lot of media coverage in the 1980s.

I don't know about the 80s but in the late 90s, I was working on one of the top restaurant guides and we had three London fish & chip shops listed - Two Brothers in Golden Green (which did indeed have the option of having your fish fried in matzo meal), the Upper Street Fish Shop in Islington (abiding memories of that place are the big jars of fantastic home-made tartare sauce you could help yourself to) and Brady's, which appropriately enough was in Battersea - never visited that one myself.

I presume the one in Paddington is the Seashell mentioned by @Cycleops - still going strong, according to the internet.

More recently, I've visited the Fishbone and Gigs, both near the office where I used to work in Fitzrovia. Both excellent.
I always have fish and chips every time I come back to the UK. I usually don't bother with the chips bit, though, as you always get far too much and I can't eat half a kilo of greasy stodge any more. I'll have double 'guacamole' and a jar of cockles with it, though.
You know they rec that guac story is made up, say it ain't so...

Man of taste!!That little shop must be known to generations all over the North. As a child,Trespadernes was for chip's,and Longcakes for ice cream,Ah the memories!
There is now a new cafe in the former bank, celebrating Kathleen Ferrier who, whilst married to the manager, was for a time a resident of Silloth.
I sometimes visit Carrs for work, and if I'm finished early enough I'll call in the chippy and sit on the front eating them, quite often I'll stay in the car though because of the fantastic weather.

Here for rides.
tlh and I have specific benches in Brighton, in Horsham, and in Aberystwyth, upon which we take fish'n'chips al fresco.

For me the ultimate hereabouts is The Regency in Brighton.

Apologies for a very slight thread diversion...I've got some Asian clients coming to London in a couple of weeks and one of them is hammering on about getting some "traditional British fish and chips"

Of course every pub does fish and chips but I suspect they aren't that great. We're staying in City area. Needs to be a sit down place rather than takeaway. I went to Poppies in Spitalfields recently which was OK but any better options? Price, for them, not really the key determinant

This place in Spitalfields claims to use fish from Billingsgate, delivered daily, prepared in house, etc, etc.

The website's a bit cranky, but I wouldn't hold that against it.

That's Poppies. It's decent but a bit of a tourist trap. My fallback option in the event of nothing better

^_^Well done!
If youre still hungry by the time you approach Carlisle, head down Wigton Rd(A595),pass the BP garage, and 400 yds later on your left you will arrive at some lights.Look left,Oh look, theres Renuccis! You could have another portion (you can sit outside, view not quite as good-cars derelict pub).
I bet Sandra6 would join me to cheer you on,We ll have to stay outside though, apparently she has form !:giggle:

A fish supper from the van that parks outside Nethy Bridge Post Office on a Monday evening costs £6 and is very tasty. It parks in various other local villages on the other days.
Part of the fun of ordering and waiting is the educating of foreign tourists, e.g. from Surrey, about what a fish supper is.

Not to mention the look on their faces when asked if they want salt n sauce.
