A Lancaster-bound class 195 at Ulverston last week. I had just arrived here on it from Ravenglass, on the wonderfully scenic Cumbrian Coast line.

What a glorious Station!!

I find the single track between two platforms rather strange, and can't think of a reason for it. Huge waste of platform space. It currently seems to be used in the Barrow-in-Furness direction only, with doors only opening on the station building side .
I presume, as a resort, it was a lot busier in its heyday, & this allowed rapid disembarkation from both side of the carriages?

It was the junction for Lakeside, the passengers could get off on the island for cross platform connection to a waiting train.

...and made luggage transfer easier for the porters too, I imagine. It's interesting how so many things, from stations to shopping centres, were designed differently before cars took over.
