welsh dragon

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
They can't cut the hedges back whilst October.

Not a hedge, just a grass verge. It grows far to fast and blocks the road

I agree
round here we have the oldest canal in the country
it was kept "in water" by the nearby coal fired power station which fed some of the used up cooling water into it
The power station has closed down and Warrington council took measure to replace the water source for their end

but Halton seem to have reckoned that if the top end is filled up then clearly the water will just flow down to their end so they just ignored the problem
except that there are blocks inbetween (its complicated) so the Warrington end if fine and pretty and nice

the Widnes end is now a smelly dried up mess and apparently the canal walls need repair before anything can be done

they have said lots of words about how concerned they are and how they are doing something and how good it is that volunteer groups have been rescuing fish and water birds and clearing up and all that

I have written (OK emailed - is that the same thing???) the local counsellors and MP and put messages on the local "Nextdoor" thingy
bet it makes no difference

{end Rant}

Aren't Canals the responsibility of Canal and Rivers Trust, rather than the Local Council?

Not that that diminishes your concern at the neglect of the Canal.

Do what I did. Get on your bike, and take yer bin to be emptied. Ensuring you have a sign big enough to be easily read saying what you're doing and why.
They've not "missed" since.

Not allowed in on a bike at ours.

Another little wander done before lunch. Need to stop going that way for a few months as the vegetation has shot up since I last did it. One to keep for late autumn through to early spring I think.

All navigable a canals usually are..If it’s earmarked for restoration this is usually by the CART.but like a lot of charities there budget has been substantially cut.

Is the Warrington end of the canal Sankey Vally?

Yes - the canal is called the St Helens canal or the Sankey canal - originally went from ST Helens to Fiddlers Ferry - then extended to Widnes some time later
apparently - I wasn't there to see it at the time!

Wa quite pretty at the Widnes - boats floating on the water, ducks, geese, men messing about with boats - all that stuff
now just an empty patch of mud with sad looking boats resting on the dried out mud and leaning at all angles

There is small housing estate opposite my local tip One of the residents pushed his garden bin across the road to the tip and was told in no uncertain terms pedestrians were not allowed to bring there bins to the tip.

Not in this case - it is the council's responsibility because it was derelict when the C&RT came into existance
there has not been a boat up it for many many years - except for a dock at the Widnes end and some moorings at Fiddlers Ferry (by a very nice pub called "The Ferry")
Funnily enough - on that subject - the bridgewater canal - also old - is just over the river and that is also not the responsibility of the C&RT but is looked after by Peel Holdings - who also own the Manchester Ship Canal
However that one is fully functional and joins to the national network
I ride along it a lot
(OK for the pedants - I ride along the tow paths next to it - in spite of what Strava normally says!!)

anyway - you did ask for a History lesson didn;t you???

A lot of canals were badly affected during last summer’s drought.Lock usage was restricted to certain times.

Yes - but this was was pretty much empty already as there was no water supply at all
the hot weather last year reduced the water level to only a few inches
this year it is actually dried up

Properly managed canals and waterways and lakes etc etc have to be managed to maintain water - the council didn;t bother

Of course - if they spent money on it then the money would have to come from elsewhere - so ......

but lets not get all NACA

maybe I should shut up

I think the ayes have it - the ayes have it!!
