Well - I think I am awake now

I am off to help out with Age Concern this afternoon
they asked for people to help clients that are having problems with computers and phone etc etc

mostly installing the NHS App and helping people use it
this afternoon is the first time I will have visited someone at home

which I am a bit nervous about - I tend to avoid things this personal

I'm sure it will go OK - I just get nervous/anxious/worried about things I have no need to feel that way about!!

But I do wish they would stop referring to people like me as "Digital Champions"
it sounds so American!!!

Barnet,
There’s currently a couple of ads showing on the telly just now where the actors have obviously had teeth whitening. I mutter to the telly…..”Oh, here’s Mr Teeth again”.

The celeb/personality whose teeth really stand out is Rylan Clark. They are like bright white beacons. Although he has had so much work done on his face it's a wonder he can smile to show them off.
I don't like him by the way, I don't suppose he likes me much either.🤔

Apparently there's a chart ( a bit like the Dulux paint chart but with various shades of White ) where you can choose your whiteness. Be great to include some fluorescent pigments so you really stand out at the Disco 😁

Likewise. I actually switch channel if he appears. He makes me cringe.

I call him Mr Plastic Face.

I remember reading about people having all their teeth removed and dentures fitted. It must have been an expensive option back then, a bit like the current fad for bottom lifts, trout pouts and the rest. Mrs Tkk tells a tale of when she was nursing. At the time she was working on the elderly care ward at Poole Hospital. One of her patients on the ward must have had a boob job at some stage. She said it looked really incongruous to see a wrinkled older lady with pert breasts 😮
I did remark, tongue in cheek, to Mrs Tkk that having read about people travelling to Turkey for dental work, perhaps that was an option, and with the money saved there would be enough for a boob job. Her reaction? let's just say that the bruises are healing nicely 😁

I seem to recall my (late) Father saying that was the "in thing to do" in the early days of the NHS, when, I assume it was free.

Had an email from our local Toby Carvery advertising that children accompanying adults can eat for £1 during the summer holidays. We visit occasionally with a friend. ( the veggie options are very good ). On our last visit there were a couple on an adjacent table who came back from the carvery with plates so heavily laden I wondered how anyone could eat that amount. When the waitress came with the bill and asked if everything was satisfactory, the man started complaining that there wasn't any crackling available, he really liked crackling which apparently Toby had in the past had it as part of the food available, and how not having crackling had spoiled his enjoyment of the meal. The waitress was really good, saying that she would pass his remarks to the management, a very diplomatic response, it must be a really difficult job dealing with some members of the public. I doubt if I would make the end of one shift 🤔

Likewise, I don't think I could have a job which involved dealing with "the public" 😂

ebiker, I'm Treasurer of a local u3a and also help where I can with IT. My knowledge is very limited but I'm confident, if that makes sense?

I know for some of our older members the digital world is difficult, frustrating and upsetting. I'd love to hear how you get on. This is truly very, very worthwhile work.

I think it may be some of the members who came over from Bikeradar so must have been something they did there?

Yes, could be, they appear to be a strange lot, not like us well balanced normal people 😂

Things seem to be ramping up in terms of request for help from Age Concern
They are just starting the service up round here so I expect things to drop off but no idea how much

but if things start to die off - how would I volunteer to help via U3A??

I'm not sure how aware you are of the u3a. There are +/- 1000 local u3as in the UK. This link will take you to the "head office" for want of a better description.

www.u3a.org.uk

Based on your user name your local branch is https://halton.u3asite.uk/ but there will be many others close by. To give local support I suggest you contact one or more of the local branches. If they perceive a need you'll be welcomed with open arms. Going to "head office" could take forever.

The u3a was previously known as the University of the Third Age. The name changed to u3a for two reasons; "University" implied a need for learning and education which discouraged many people. The second reason was as part of an overall revamp to appeal to younger people.

It can give the appearance of being full of "old" people. In reality many are only old in years.......like me, I hope! 🤔
