Reading in the news, it looks like they want us old farts off the road
good job we have a bike or will they ban that as well.

This really boils my **** all the headlines are " Over 70's will be band from driving" no we won't, all that's being proposed is an eye test. Totally hysterical reporting deliberately spending fear and anxiety.

See that

so it should be "over 70s who can;t see the damn road - banned from driving"
which I would only object to in the manner of maybe everyone should have an eye test but maybe younger people at longer intervals or something

On my ride yesterday I went through Moore nature reserve
on the approach road there is an industrial estate and just before that is a right angle turn and a railway bridge
I let a lorry pass me and when I got to the bridge he was stopped blocking the whole road
and the driver's door was open and someone - it turned out to be the driver - was standing outside
I pulled up wondering what was happening

as I stopped he looked and me and said
"It says 15 foot 8 but I not f******g trusting it!!"

I looked up and saw that his load was just inches from the lowest part of the bridge - which was actually some cables in metal sleeves (which is a bit dodgy in itself)
and the clearance between the bottom of the bridge and the top of the load was - from the look of it at ground level - less that inches and possible negative!!

I could see why he had stopped!

we made a few comments between us that are not suitable for publication and I asked if there was any way he could lower the trailer at all

he looked at me then said "Oh yeah"
and jumped into the cab and pressed a button and the front of his load slowly dropped severl inches

he was still looking up and wondering when I left

but I did wonder why some ex teacher who have never even been in a lorry thought of that
when a lorry driver who has enough experience to realise that his load was damn close to a bridge on a route that was presumably cleared for it
didn;t

anyway - as I approached the warehouses a small truck was heading out which I resume was help for him
it was certainly a case where an extra set of eye outside the cab would be a good idea

I was wondering why the lowest point of the bridge was a run of several cable - which could have been on the side
maybe there is a reason but I can;t think of one!!

He could also have let some air out of the tyres to lower it an inch or two.

Just seen a newspaper article (online) saying that the Old Age Pension age goes up next year

I knew that but had a look anyway

Damn scary to find that my wife is only a couple of weeks off getting her pension a year (or more) after I get mine

not sure if that would be a good thing - showing that she is young then me
or a bad thing because I am getting money she should have been getting when we both started paying tax etc

for context - she is 13 days younger than me

I keep telling people that she lied about her age
because when we first met she told me that she was 2 week younger than me

2 point
a) she denies this - but she would
b) one day she will get fed up of me telling people this - that day might be in the past

He could also have let some air out of the tyres to lower it an inch or two.

That was how I was thinking

but apparently he had a more hi tech option - maybe he normally never needs it
I would have expected that a route into a well used industrial place - with lots of lorries coming and going - would be planned ahead of time and checks made for height and turning circles and all that

nowadays I would expect lorries to use a satnav type thingy that would do it automatically

maybe that was what he was talking about when he said he was "not f*****g trusting it"!!!

Was that heading back ie Warrington towards Widnes ?
If so I know it well.

I think you'll find following tw*tnav blindly is the cause of the majority of bridge strikes. As well as trucks getting stuck in all sorts of stupid places.

I read somewhere that this is true - it was talking about lorries getting stuck on narrow road but the same applies

BUT it made the point that they are supposed to use Sat Navs that are made specifically for lorries and you can tell them things like height and length and turning circle
and it will make sure the lorry can use a route it fits on

but that is more expensive so some don;t
and probably some just don't bother setting it up properly and telling it things like height for every trip

sounds like this guy did - and still checked himself when he got to the bridge

so sounds like he did it right!
