We are going to build a hedgehog house.
With your experience can you recommend a size and shape etc.
Also, now you've used the camera for a while would you recommend the same or something difference.

Hi Dave, good man, there's endless fascination watching the wildlife in your garden. I got my hedgehog houses pre built from a lady in Portland ( Dorset ). There may well be a local hedgehog charity that can offer advice, but there are several online guides to building your own. The feeding station is a large plastic storage crate with a lid, again there's some really excellent online guides as to dimensions etc. It's trial and error with the feeding station entrance, you build a sort of dogleg ( I used house bricks) to stop the cats pinching the food). Dry cat food is ideal for hedgehogs, don't give them milk as it's not good for them.
Cameras, I have Eufy wireless ones, inexpensive, don't need a subscription, 2K resolution and excellent battery life.
I will PM you later with details of the models I have and benefits/ drawbacks as I don't want to clog up the thread.

Interesting, after reading about the Jacobite line in Scotland. Apparently they need to comply with new legislation about central locking on the carriages and that can`t be achieved unless there is a diesel unit supplying power at the rear. This makes it unviable. So just wondering about the steam train you are going on ? I guess in all the years that the Jacobite (Harry Potter) has been running on normal opening and closing of the doors there has`nt been an issue.

Edit Just a thought, but why don`t they use batteries that then can be recharged at either end of the route ? It would be better than using solar panels on the heritage carriages (TIC). There has to be ways around not usIng a diesel unit ?

There are carriages that are basically a generator carriage that supplies power to the train when steam hauled.
I would of thought that converting carriages that are 50/60/70 years old that have no provision for electrical door locking would be prohibitively expensive.

Thanks Kev. I have already been on line and seen some designs. There are some inexpensive ones made of decent wood but my SiL has got it into his mind that wants to make one.
There is a brook running directly behind my garden and the bank on my side which is overgrown with brambles and bushes is full of life eg there are foxholes, lots of birds and I know there are hedgehogs as my neighbour is visited every night.
The bottom of the fence is concrete slabs so we are going to cut an inverted 'V' into it.

That is why I think the Jacobite is struggling. I think that it all comes down to health and safety.

The day started off grey, cold, cloudy and slowly warmed to a beautiful afternoon and evening. #2SP has been here all day, she's been very busy, Granddad has been very busy, Granddad is nackered and is wondering if 8.40pm is too early for bedtime???? That really is the sum total of my day! Mainly rolling around on the floor with a 16 month old. Joyous.

The WSR is a 'heritage railway' not a mainline service.

I like seeing the oilseed rape but I don’t think people who suffer from hay fever like it much?

My hay fever started to become a problem that year a while ago where - due to EU subsidies - the whole country turned yellow
or at least that is what a big newspaper said and they were not far wrong

It has been a pain ever since!!!
