Not a "Chips Away" story, but, an "accidental backing into story"....
When Daughter No1 passed her driving test, she came home beaming. I told her she could take my car, and drive to her friend's house, to tell her the good news /have a little boast. Her mother gave her all of the "drive carefully" advice.
Off she went. She parked outside of her friends house, and, went in to tell her friend the good news. Whilst she was in there, a neighbour reversed into my car!
Poor Daughter No1, she was totally innocent, but, mortified. Her sisters still mention it occasionally, even 38 years later!
Reminds me of when I passed mine
Shortly after my GranDad was ill and stayed at ours for a while
He was rather pedantic about driving properly and other things
but my dad was sure I was fine driving
anyway - Grandad was going home for the day and coming back in the evening to see how he was on his own
so I was detailed to drive him home as he couldn't drive yet
I got in the car and all was well
until the car stopped - the engine just slowly started pulling less and stopped. Would not start no matter what I did.
This was well before mobile phones
so I ended up runnign home - probably the furthest I have ever run (I don't do running!)
got my Dad and we went bakc in Mum's car
Turned out that GranDad tried to start the car himself a minute or so after I left and it started first time and he left it running and it was fine
My Uncle was a mechanic and looked at it later and the carb was bunged up with some rubbish which must have starved the engine of petrol
but it looked like me driving badly in some manner
and I felt terrible for leaving my sick Grandad alone in the car while I ran home!!
