Two pieces of earnestness....
I was sorting some old dvds last night and found a copy of the mockumentary "Bob Roberts". It was made in 1992 and describes the political rise of the eponymous businessman/folk music star on the back of a hard right agenda and an anti-political elite type schtick. Instead of twitter (internet not much of a thing in 92) Roberts promotes himself to the MTV generation using folk/country songs and videos with subverted rightwing lyrics. The highlight is a Bob Dylan rework "Times they are changing back", complete with prompt card video. "Take back America" is another nationalist toe-tapper. There are hints of darker forces, media manipulation, financial shenanigans and even a disabled reporter. If you can get past Alan Rickman chomping the scenery as an Steve Bannon-style eminence grise it's a funny and thought-provoking watch.
And finally a quote...
“As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.”
L H Mencken
