My mother was a Catholic before she became a JW

They most certainly do.
They do? The one that came here, a few weeks ago, say that Catholics are unmovable so they leave them alone. They also said that they only read from the OT. Is that bit still correct of my understanding of JWs

JWs are quite a new thing to us, as we used to live in more rural areas and the front doors were a half a mile apart so they never came around.

I wonder what branch of religion the door knockers were then? I had assumed JWs as they had pamphlets and a sort of miserable look about them.

surely with only 144,000 places in heaven, they should maybe not try to encourage others to join the flock... in fact the most sensible activity for a JW to embark on would be to somehow kill off their brethren until there's no more than 144,000 of them left, thus guaranteeing themselves a place in heaven.

At least JWs get out there into the community to try and spread their word.

Christians, Jews, Buddhists and Muslims have never knocked on my door.

I miss the Salvation Army in the Pub!

We used to have a sprightly old dear who would come round with her rather charming granddaughter

We always asked for a copy of Young Soldier as it had games in and was far more fun than the adult version

They don't, or shouldn't, generally care what religion their prospective conversions are, if they think they can turn them they'll give it a shot.
The JWs take many of their teachings from the NT, much of what they believe is based on the teachings of Christ as opposed to the fire and brim stone of the OT, the biggy for the JWs of course is armageddon which is the realisation of the book of Revelations.

The vast majority of JWs do not believe they will be going to heaven they believe they will live forever in a paradise on Earth. The 144,000 are a very select group and if you have not been chosen you will not go, it wouldn't matter how many other JWs you bumped off to try to get there, if you aint on the list, you aint getting in.

When I was growing up, we used to get regular visits from Mrs Robinson, who was so sweet my mum never had the heart to turn her away, and used to buy her Awake & Watchtowers. What Mrs Robinson never knew was that my younger sister used to delight in adding captions or otherwise amending the line drawings. One I remember was a bucolic pastoral scene, with sunshine and hills, bunny rabbits and deer, lions lying down with lambs, the whole bit, with the headline 'What did God see missing?' The answer presumably being Mankind. My sister, however, saw it otherwise, and had drawn in a perfectly-rendered McDonalds. complete with golden arch.

That is so wrong.
My m.i.l. was a Catholic and became a J.W because the Catholic priests were incapable of answering her questions whereas the J.Ws gave scriptural answers.......from the old & new testaments

One of them put the shots up me in a pub on Christmas eve when I was sixteen.

Standing at the bar I suddenly noticed a dark uniform alongside me, I edged a sideways glance expecting to see a copper, but was relieved to see a Sally Army bloke shaking a tin.

I went out with a girl from a JW family when I was sixteen, she was definitely rebelling against it.

It all ended rather messily when her dad found out and she was hauled before the elders.

Apparently her brothers were looking for me as well, although I never ran into them unfortunately.

Must have just been a rogue JW then, the one who told me what she told me, I mean. I've not had much to do with them and only know what the JWs that I have spoken to have told me.
They've never been a problem where we are now. We are always polite to them and will chat to them. I have heard that some have been a bit sniffy about being told 'no thankyou' but the ones that come around here seem OK.

I was at college with a JW lady for a while (short 4 week course). She told us that her children were bullied about not celebrating Christmas and birthdays. She said that if she left the JW church that none of her family would have nothing to do with her, ever again. I felt that was a tad harsh.
