It's took the heat off Rapha quite nicely.
ah-ha! Will they feel bound to compete? I must admit I liked their tweed jacket, but thought it a little steep at £450

now - I confess that I have bought any number of coats for anything between £500 and £1200 - although not for myself, and never again.....but the Brooks jacket looks very, very ordinary for that kind of dough. And, to be frank, the only thing going for the bags is that they look like bags used to look when I was a kid, which is to say that they're not as serviceable as the modern bags made by Carradice or Agu or Ortlieb (which are expensive enough).

Some folk just have more money then sense!

Yep, they do.

Why would you want to look like you're not riding a bike whilst your riding your bike? That jacket is hilarious, can't decide whether it's Dick Tracey or just for complete dicks.

As for the WW1 trench coat, only a muppet would buy it, it won't be truly authentic and you'd pick up something that was, made by reenactors for a third of that price.

It's a bit more complicated than that...
Within the last day or so I'm sure I've seen someone posting a link to the marketing agency Brooks use, which apparently set out the strategy. Now, of course, I can't find out. But it's pretty clear - it's all about creating an aura of top-end old-fashioned British style. The fact that the prices are quoted in Euros illustrates that they are not aiming for the domestic market (and, yes, I know Brooks is an Italian-owned company these days). Amd it's not as if any British cyclist would ever drop large amounts of money to get an illusory image, is it..

Still, for £40 or so you can get the best saddle in the world from them.

Why would you want to look like you're not a cyclist when riding a bike?

That is easy enough. Some of us, when cycling in an urban context, dress for the destination not the journey. That jacket, albeit apparently overpriced as it is, is a part of that mindset. Would I commute 13 miles in something like that? Unlikely. Would I ride a boris or a brommie from Victoria to elsewhere in,say, zone 1 or 2 whilst dressing in something similar? I already do.

Horses for courses and if people want to drop wads on these things, it is a free country.

It's a marketing truism that if you price something cheap nobody believes it to be any good. Isn't there some story about how Suntour launched a fantastic groupset that was better than anything Campy or Shimano had ever done but because they priced it too cheaply nobody believed it was any good so none of the professional team managers specced it for their bikes? It flopped apparently.

I find myself strangely drawn to the idea Brompton's Oratory jacket but have not yet seen one in the flesh.

'Only' £250 but it seems you have to provide your own leather elbow patches (Honey coloured please to match my Brooks saddle)
