Its funny how every time we get snow the country seems to come to a stand still. only reading the paper the other day, that trams could not run as ice was on the tracks. God help us when the snow gets here.

I used to work with a Norwegian girl and she found it funny how this country stopped at the first sign of snow and ice. She did have to admit that Norway has far more snow and ice so it's much more cost effective for them to deal with it. We'd end up spending a fortune just for a week or two per year.

She also used to go on about how she felt much colder here than in Norway too.

The difference is up north its a bit of snow and we get on with it , down south its headline news and the country is in turmoil

I was standing by the St Lawrence River, waiting for the ferry. There was a seventy mile an hour blizzard, four feet of level snow and thick ice on the river.

The ferry didn't come for three months.

In places like Norway and Canada, apart from the regularity of winter snowfall, it's so cold that snow's solid all the time, effectively acting like cold sand. Half the problems we get with wintry weather are caused by the temperature bouncing around the freezing point of water.

A lot worse for cycling and driving, that snow near freezing. Much better a bit colder, then it grips better than a lot of surfaces, like @marknotgeorge says. Once you get past a certain temperature, you get less snow because the cold has frozen the humidity out of the air, so any front has less moisture to work with.

I seem to remember the Maintenance of Way car greasing the wires with some conductive grease, and pushing a large flat car full of stones or something in the morning to help break ice off the tracks so the trolley cars would work.
