There are no safe levels of Alcohol consumption ....

Based solely upon four late night admissions to A&E, two of which were by ambulance and none of which was alcohol related, I have to say in my limited experience, A&E was littered with people either presenting themselves, or arriving by ambulance, following incidents fueled by alcohol. Many of those in A&E had clearly drunk too much, whilst others had clearly been drinking, but were in the wrong place at the wrong time. And of the admissions, only one was on a Friday night.

When my one of my daughters was a nurse in London, she did a stint in A&E. Her feedback, again anecdotal, was that alcohol played a part in most of the patients seen in A&E during the hours 9pm to 3am.
Just how many of the late night drunks and Buckfast fuelled neds do you think will pay any heed to the new quotas ? Yes abuse of alcohol is a serious problem but nannying the respectable drinkers of the middle class isn't the solution.

If anyone want some sober (boom-tish) reading I would recommend the Nuffield Trust Report on 'Alcohol-specific activity in hospitals in England'* As is noted therein, up to 35% of all Accident & Emergency (A&E) attendance and ambulance costs may be alcohol related, increasing to 70% of A&E attendances at peak times on the weekends (between midnight and 5am).

I don't believe the latter figure, it looks wildly overestimated to what I see and read whilst working in one of the busiest A&E's on weekend nights, my favourite shifts. The former 35% figure is also pre-fixed with "up to"............... I honestly don't think I've been on a shift with 35% of admissions to be alcohol related, never mind 70%.

I'd be interested in correct figures and don't really understand why there are "estimates" and "up to's", every admission is logged.

"You and your lot"!!! Assume if you come up with enough bullshite about alcohol you will wear the thick working class into giving up drink and you will get a more compliant working class. You will of course continue to drink at your dinner parties.

And the proof!

People with a drink problem lie. As any GP will tell you, triple what people report they are drinking and you'll get somewhere near the truth.

Good point and I won't argue about the possible figures.

But I am in A&E on late shifts all week, at the weekend I'll give my estimate of alcohol related admissions.

Triple is over the top and they only lie to keep the doctor off their back. Telling the dentist I drunk 2 pints a day got me a new load of bollocks "you will get mouth cancer".
Others that lie.
Fat people.....although they actually believe their own lies.
Very thin people..the same applies to believing their own lies.
Cyclist who think they actually ride on average far greater distances then they do. Again lieing to themselves. This may apply to most people who don't exercise a lot.
The best one I heard was from someone who never exercises her dogs. "My dogs probably get 12 miles exercise a day running back and forward to the gate to bark at people"....the distance 5 yards.
I don't think people lie to there doctors about alcohol because they believe the lies, it's just to keep the doctor of their back. Its only going to get worse the more rubbish they come out with. I think I will now be tea total, I will have to be if "there are no say levels of alcohol". Shite!
