They're not like that any more and the seats higher I just left them like that until I had the pedals

Not convinced in over 30 years of racing and riding that it makes much difference. Bike types/tyres etc will make a difference.

Well, there are many factors. A nice new road bike is indeed faster than a hybrid. Main reasons are tyres, ride position and a little bit of weight. You can easily make a moutain bike as quick as a road bike on the road... put lightweight road tyres on it.
