Over a couple of year period I was the victim of a lot of crime at my house.
I had a gang turn up and try and smash the way into the house with hammers, for the car. The first time I repelled them the second time they turned up I gave them the keys (hot hatch..later used in crime).
I interrupted a guy taking my car apart (replacement cold hatch) on the drive, trying to steal the airbags.
I’ve also had my metal cycle sheds broken into. The first time they nicked the bikes the second time a couple of weeks later it was still empty.
My dad’s a retried cop, so I’ve had the basics drilled into me from birth (make the house looked live in, don’t leave stuff on display, keep car keys upstairs etc….).
This is what I’ve learnt.
CCTV - This seemed to be the killer feature. Since installing this I’ve not had one issue. As people have mentioned thieves go for easy target and getting caught on CCTV is not worth the risk. It also has the added benefit that in the period after one these incidents you can be a bit jumpy. If you hear a bang at night quick check on the phone, it’s a cat, so straight back to sleep.
Alarms – They have a place. The advantage to me is if I’m in the house it gives me time to react. I’ve read that vibration/tamper detectors are better as they may stop the thief entering the house in the first place. They try a window, the alarm goes off and they run off.
Cycle Sheds – Not all metal cycle sheds are the same.
Lock – Not all locks are the same.
Post theft, months later parts of one of my stolen bikes appeared on
ebay 30 miles away. So if you know your components keep an eye out for them, not just the whole bike. If you spot them contact the police, it turn out the ebay seller had bought the bike in good faith and was further up the chain.
