Doom. I'm not riding at the moment due to another severe attack of thigh muscle pain. It's like being imprisoned ! This is a condition I've had for some years (since I was 30, I'm now an old git of 41) and varies in intensity from a twinge to completely crippling (ie can't walk more than a few yards). Right now I can walk, but cycling's a no no. It tends to happen every 3 months or so but so far this year I've been fine so this latest bout is a bit demoralising.

I've had 3 biopsies and sought specialist advice but the doc's have no idea although they figure it might be a mitochondrial thing. Unfortunately I don't know about any family history of this condition (which is really important) as I was adopted. The good thing though is I know that after a few days to 2 weeks I should be back in the saddle and completely fine.

Aside from shamelessly seeking sympathy, if anyone has any ideas or has ever had anything similar or know someone who has it would be really useful to know as I've reached a bit of a dead end in terms of docs etc. ;)

This is a complete stab in the dark.. and if the medical profession have started to wash their hands of you .. well..
Consider possibly that you do have poor blood supply to the muscles?
Counteracted by exercising said muscles... front and back
Consider that you have a deficiency in certain minerals that muscles like to have in order to function correctly..
calcium.. magnesium .. potassium

well I hope that there is light at end of tunnel

Oh and remember .. scientists are still unsure how muscles actually work anyways.. they have a very good idea and lots of papers written about it over the years but some aspects of the function remain a mystery as to why they work!

Thanks IaS, really appreciate your post and I'll look into the pottassium etc. The blood supply thing is also something I might need to look at especially in winter when I doggedly stick to wearing shorts throughout and sod the temperature. Mrs G has just bought me some tracky bottoms so I should be more snug from now on even if folk think I've gone soft. You are right though the medical profession has pretty much given up on me which makes it a bit tedious when all you want to do is get out there but can't!
