Personally I love a woman who can drive well, knows how machines work and can use a spanner

Funnily enough, I love a man who can do the same things...!

My job (collecting recycling at the kerbside) is one that many would consider a male preserve, and especially in winter when I'm bundled up in layers and coats, and wooly hat, people have been known to approach me from behind with the words "Here, mate....", leading to confusion when they realise I'm a girl. In summer it's more obvious, because my figure (such as it is) is more visible, and my summer sun hat has flowers on it...

I think in two years, I've had a couple of chaps say "They shouldn't make a girl do that job", and they were both old men. My boss says that he thinks having a girl on the team is a positive thing, just for balance, although I could hardly be described as girly.

There are things that my male colleagues can do better than me, due to sheer physical strength (and in a couple of cases, height). On the other hand, I make up for it by not calling in sick everytime I get a cold. ;)

Hah that is hilarious!

Fletch I think you misunderstand what I wrote - I don't think a predisposition exists for being more modest - a stereotype isn't about biological determinism. Natural you're assuming is based in genetic hardwiring? This couldn't be further from what I was saying. It is a societal norm, men and women are told and have behaviours reinforced that adhere to gender stereotpyes. What is genetic about modesty? There are social and historical explanations for the idea of feminine modesty but I cannot see biological ones.

This is what gets me; science that has reported no sex differences between men and women do not get reported by media, however, stuff that does (and there is a whole host of studies that support as well as disprove) gets headlines time after time. There is NO conclusive research that suggests that there is a wide gender gap or sex predisposition to do X, Y or Z.

Out of your list, what is solidly down to genes and not socialisation or pressure/expectation - and this is all moulded from family, friends, peers as well as the advertising, media and societal influence. Plus, there is no way to isolate the influence of experience and learning from affecting biology. My arguement is that biology is fluid and is equally influenced by culture, experience and new situations.

It's a bit more complicated than that...
Calling grown women "girls". Calling your wide "her indoors", "wifey" or "the little woman".

VERY MANLY. But makes you look a bit of a tit.

(Yes, I know grown women call each other, and themselves, "girls", but it's always seemed like pandering to sexism to me.)

Or in my case, just a word I like. Woman seems too brusque, and lady seems too genteel.
