When I was young we used to go up the field , break off some branches, stick a blob of clay on the end and go mud twanging. Great fun, we used to get plastered.

Same effect using crab apples . Do you still get crab apple trees planted by the council?

We used to go down to the River Itchen at night and mould some mud from the bank into a ball the size of a small grapefuit. We would stick a banger into the mudball and light the blue touch-paper. When it had started fizzing properly, we would lob it into the inky waters and watch it glowing as it sank. There would then be a small underwater explosion and a load of gunpowder smoke would rise up from the depths. We never managed to harvest any trout with our depth-charges.

Cutting open fireworks which failed to explode and pouring to the content out to make "genies".
Always that dilemma of getting close enough to the black powder pile to light it to appear brave to your mates, but far enough away so you didn't get a face full of flash.

Two out of many, on your Sturmey Archer equipped bike and holding on to the back of a lorries and buses to get a tow; they were far slower in those days.

Making bows and arrows to take on the other gang who occupied the far side of the Makabusi River. We graduated to cross bows as they had a greater range but, luckily weren't accurate.
