It was not a good time to discover that I've an unusually high tolerance to local anaesthetic!
My G.P had a contact with a local private surgeon. My impression was the operation was performed in his conservatory on the dinning room table with assistance from his wife who was acting as the operating theatre nurse.
I was however very impressed by the truss thing to support one’s testicles post op.
I still wear mine on special occasions 🤣🤣🤣🤣

My Mum was like that
The anaesthetist would do what they do and say
"now count down from 10 to 1"
and people normally get to 7 is they are lucky
My Mum would get to one - go onto to zero and then ask what to do next
her record was to get to 2 on the third time round
but then she would take hours to come out of it
