Interesting read I am just a couple of weeks away from getting back to cycling similar age & weight, I am fairly local just down the road nr Heaton Park I am looking at some routes to ride that keep me off the main roads, looking at a ride out round Settle, Gisbon area if you fancy it one weekend

Early weekend mornings are great times to go out riding, the roads mostly empty here. That's probably why so many club runs are at that time. See if you can find out more about any National Cycle Network routes where you are - they are often down country lanes, old train line paths etc away from traffic.
