It's not cycling it is in everything. Last year on holiday there were two young German couples and they spoke to each other in English, which seemed very strange.

I disagree that it harks back to colonialism. My thought is that we are all speaking American, not English. The US is the dominant force in World culture over the past 70 years. American is the standard language in International travel, films, television and music stem from there and pervade all delivered entertainment. I had a discussion with another German last year who agreed that if say the invasion of the North American continent had gone differently and the Spanish had struck out and settled in the main body of America then we would all speak fairly good Spanish and English would also be on the wane.

I'm sure David Millar,in his book says that to be a pro cyclist you have to be able to talk French as that's the language that dominates cycling.

Don't forget @gavroche you are watching it in GB and unfortunately/fortunately English is the language most of the world understands.

Anyway when do your French classes start so we can all start to read L'equipe?

Oh, and if you think that the French are hard done by ... how about the fact that English isn't English any more? English is apparently what is spoken in the USA and we now speak British English. At least, that is according to most spell checkers!
Well, to be fair , I don't like the English language being Americanized either, specially the spelling.

Let's face it, in 200 years time we will probably all be speaking Mandarin ...

(Well, I won't, because I have no intention of hanging about that long, but you know what I mean!)
There will be elements of Mandarin in a single global language which would be difficult for us to comprehend, but as you say, we won't be there.

It's really rather simple - more folks, who've access to the money and/or time to watch the TdF (along with pretty much every other sport) speak English than any other language..

So...............if you want French to dominate instead of English - faire l'amour et faire des bébés - lots and lots - you're gonna need to multiply the population of France by at least 10 - probably closer to 20 - so..less posting, more making of ze lurve.

What happened to Esperanto?

I like the idea of everybody studying their own language plus one global language. That way we could keep our own cultures but could still communicate with everyone else. The problem is that English is making a play for being the global language and that annoys many people. (Obviously we could learn extra languages too if we enjoyed doing so, but there wouldn't be an actual need to do it.)
