From what I have heard it's nothing new. I heard of a recent case involving a university lecturer who apparently moved from post to post going off sick (alcoholism) and getting substantial sums in compensation for agreeing to leave. He'd got away with it because, my informant told me, part of the deal was that he'd also get a decent reference. His compensation was considerably more than the average in the report.

Unfortunately this gets any genuine cases a bad name. There are always some who find a way of abusing a system and this sort of thing is probably far less damaging than the ability of others to avoid/evade their fair share of taxes.

If you break it down it is about £23,000 each employee. If a teacher is off sick on full pay they will get a good £30k per year. More for admin and 'ers NI etc. So sounds like it is a good move for the council.

it's not unusual. 20 people get paid £450,000, That's an average of £22,500 each, which may only be 6 months salary to a middle manager or senior teacher.

If you need to move someone on, then it makes sense.

You would be surprised at what goes on. My job role means I see the figures across the many companies I have worked for. If someone is off sick for a long time, it's usually easier to give them a year's salary to wave a 'mutual' good bye. Also stops industrial tribunal.

I've seen some very high payments, where someone is retiring of their own choice, is in a very high position, then 'negotiates' a very substantial well into six figure 'pay off' with senior staff - makes you sick when you see it as you realise some people are in it for themselves, what ever they may have 'told' you to your face prior to that.

It's still ridiculous just get rid of them, they never sack bad teachers, they get moved along to the next school.
I hate public sector workers, (most) and train drivers/London underground.

One of the big problems the public sector has is getting rid of useless staff, since a discreet cheque in exchange for useless person giving his/her notice as used in the private sector is not an option.
Six - nine month's pay doesnt sound bad value if the alternative is them being "sick" until retirement or an endless drain in management time.
