Thunderbird/googlemail problem

I use googlemail, with Thunderbird on my main computer and on my laptop.
Windows 7

Lately it has been failing to send messages, saying the connection to the server was reset. Usually I can save the message as draft (so Thunderbird is still talking to googlemail), and then log onto googlemail on the web and then send it.

Today it has just sent a couple of emails with large attachements, but failed to copy them to googlemail's send mail folder.

Anyone any idea what's going on? I haven't changed any settings, I'm not having any trouble with other internet connections, etc.

I know Gmail uses non-standard ports, but I guess they won't have changed them.

At a total guess try putting in your username with gmail instead of googlemail at the end.

Would it be a daft question to ask why you don't just use Gmail all the time and ditch Thunderbird?

It sounds like an implementation issue, well an issue with the sockets being kept open. Could be caused by a wide variety of things, most likely a build that doesn't cope well with packet loss. How well does your connection perform on pingtest.net, and have you tried on a connection other than your home one.

GMail uses standard ports (c.f. http://www.iana.org/assignments/service-names-port-numbers/service-names-port-numbers.xml port 993 is "imap4 protocol over TLS/SSL", and 465 is a legacy SSL port, I can't find the link to the RFC for it though).

Username shouldn't matter, you don't even need the @ if it's a gmail address.

Had the same issues when I upgraded to a Samsung RV510 Win7 laptop so am now using Windows live mail. No more issues.

I use thunderbird because I'm not always connected to the internet and I like to have my emails all there. I also find it easier to search for old emails (to do with work) on Thunderbird.

I'll try some of those tests, sportmonkey, but it was working a week ago, and now is working intermittently, and I haven't changed anything in between, which is what is puzzling me.
