IME the Marathon Winters are great on ice, like others have experienced, not so good on fresh snow, you can still use them if you are very careful - I've done my 5 mile commute practically without braking on Monday because there was fresh snow rather than ice, stayed upright though.are they a better compound and tread pattern? Never mind the prickly ones

You need to embed the studs riding carefully for about 40 miles first, you might experience the loss of a few.
On the other hand, the prickly ones (marathon snow studs) are good on ice and on snow/slush both.
Both tyres can be used in normal road conditions if inflated hard - I've been riding on the Winters long before it got icy.
If you read both threads I've linked to, you will find all the info you need and the most recent experience of winter riding from a few of us.
Schwalbe do a Snow Stud and Ice Spiker tyre which are supposed to be good for icy/snowy conditions.
Snow studs work on steep slippy very muddy climbs too - tested them 'extensively'. Very good tyres indeed ! They work on any surface you can chuck the bike at.
