The lad had an Inset day and wanted to go to the Natural History Museum. We got the Oxford Tube coach and I didn't really notice him, he was a bit dishevelled and a bit disconnected.
Anyhow, once on the bus he got on his mobile (he owns a mobile!) and made a doctors appointment and immediately his voice was familiar from my fave period of late review with Alison Pearson and Tony Parsons. All was confirmed when he told the receptionist his name was Thomas Paulin.

Funny who you see often in the oddist of places ....
I mention this because I've told a couple of people and nobody knew who he was.

I liked that trio too, Fab. tom Paulin always came across as a bit laconic and 'pseudo' (my lack of understanding what he was going on about I expect). Tony Parsons and Alison Pearson were a bit more approachable - Pearson was a quite funny critic before she became all 'Daily Maily'
Matthew Collings, the art bloke / critic is a good sub. for Tom Paulin - incomprehensible to me the few times I have heard him. No telly now so cannot comment on how much he and others have improved.

I remember being in a cinema in Notting Hill Gate when Tom Conti came in and collected some tickets. It sounded so weird hearing him say his name!

Aperitif, I never understood what he said either ... but I liked the way he said it. I should have asked-him to critique the coach-trip  .

To be honest I lost interest in Late Review when the trio dissappeared. I often watch-it, but it somehow lacks the chemistry.

@ Yello, the voice is unmistakeable!

Glad I've found people who know who he is though.

Tom Paulin was wonderful. BTW, did he ever manage to finish a sentence? Great entertainment.

he certainly put on a show, quite a skill to get those speech mannerisms off pat like that. Didn't always hold up so well if you dissected what he was actually saying, touch of the form over substance.

But how can anyone miss Tony Parsons? I used to think maybe I was just not 'getting it' until I had the misfortune to read his attempt at a book.

I'm with MacB on that.

Paulin used to one of the ornaments of Radio 4. I think his transition to telly was, in a way, his undo-ing. He became a sort of variety act.

Deffo Alison Pearson, 'Teef. Money can have a disastrous effect on people.

No, he really is dire. What a pity that he and Julie Birchill divorced and inflicted themselves on two other people.
