Had my first off on my new bike today, was looking down to replace my water bottle and low and behold when I looked back up I was veering towards the curb, didn't have time to change my course so down I went. A few bumps and scrapes, sore shoulder, grazed knee and elbow but I'll live. More importantly I scratched my new carbon wheels, gutted, they look like surface scratches so hopefully they will polish out.
Just want to say a big thanks to the guy from Chester road club who stopped to see if I was ok and made sure I was steady before I completed my journey home.
The worst bit about it was the fact I only had 5km to go after completing 65Km. Never mind, more concentration required I think.

Oh no! Glad you're okay...I don't need an excuse to fall off, I do it regularly!

Bad luck for the OFF and I hope you are OK. Practicing getting the bottle back by 'feel' instead of looking is an exercise worth perfecting !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

+1

The first time I went clipless I hadn't quite appreciated what slow speed, messing about with a water bottle and forgetting I was attached to the bike might mean. Fortunately the traffic was stationary and the chaps in the Kwik Fit garage beside me didn't laugh too much.

Ermm ... not to me  not in those circumstances anyway
GWS @sean8997, give the bike a wee cuddle, she must be in shock.

When lacquer scratches it goes powdery and white making it look worse than it its. You can probably polish them out using wet and dry to smooth them out then finishing with car polish. Obviously you'll need to remove the polish from the brake tracks afterwards. The most drastic solution is to re-lacquer the wheels.

20 years of mountain biking tells me that once you've had a fall you will probably fall a couple more times on the same ride because you've lost your nerve or just been rattled. Look at poor old Froomey on the Roubaix stage of the TDF; the man looked defeated.

While we were up in Yorkshire for the TdF my 16 year old son misjudged a left hand bend and ended up lying in a bed of nettles.

Back at the campsite I was explaining to the guys in the next tent why he was looking a bit down when one of them came over and put his hand on his shoulder and asked if it was his first crash. When he told him it was he said 'Well done - you're a real cyclist now'.

So sean8997 'Well done - you're a real cyclist now'

I saw a young lady last week on her bike
She was riding full-pelt down a hill
She hadn't got brakes and she couldn't pull up
And I knew she was in for a spill
She got to the bottom, ran into a wall
And fell in a ditch on her head
As I lifted her up I said "Miss, are you hurt?"
And she turned up her nose, and she said:

"Ay always get orf lake thet
Ay always get orf lake thet
Ay've broken the bike and Ay've torn my clothes
Ay believe there's a bit orf the end of my nose
Peculiar habit Ay've gort I suppose
But Ay always get orf lake thet"

That's what you should have said - I always get off like that.

Don't worry about the scratches - you can't see em when you're moving so just keep moving  And anyway if you do polish them out you'll do it again a week later - I got a big stone chip on my new (to me) car windscreen. After fretting about it for days I decided I was just gonna have to get over it and put up with it. Next time out in the car I got another one - I was sooo glad I hadn't bothered getting it replaced ^_^

Also I got myself a cx bike last autumn. I got some nice grippy slick tyres for it but thought I'd ride it for a few days first then put the new tyres on over the weekend. On my way home friday night the front wheel slid from under me going round a corner 50 yards from home. Scratched up the brake levers real good. Was gutted at the time, but a month later there was bad frost one morning and the gritters didn't go out, and I had 2 offs within 50 yards and ended up walking a mile back to the ice-free main road. I was less gutted about the scratches on the levers after that.
