Quickest I've done is about 22mph I think, and I struggle to get my average above about 9mph  . I ride a steel mtb with front sus' and panniers though.

This is a bit of a pissing contest so I'll join in... circa 10.5km with a 900m decent, according to bikehike maximum gradient was about 45%. Average speed circa 30mph, maximum speed a touch over 50mph, I didn't run out of gears or legs, I just didn't feel safe going faster. I can spin to around 160ppm, down hill, my real maximum ppm for applying pressure to the peddles, which equates to a bit under 60mph on my old 52:11 gearing.

The fastest I have been is about 38mph on my steel mountain bike. I would of gone faster, however the thing that really slowed me down was the drag produced.

My average on my most recent rides have been around 12-13mph

Thanks for that most useful data. My trip to Switzerland has been cancelled.

Mind you, the Government will probably encourage me to go, what with the need for economies from an ageing population .

No dude! Get a refund on the plane ticket, and tell your "loved ones" to do the same.

I was absolutely not trying to score any points at all. All this talk of going supersonic down the North Face of the The Eiger just got on my tits, that's all.

My commute on a skinny aluminium hybrid averages about 10.5 mph in central London, and I just cannot break the (pitiful) 23 mph barrier on flat windless beautiful tarmac in Battersea Park.

Thanks for the post.

On the flat that's around my top speed to, although I dont ever tend to drop below 16mph...must be chitty and her amazing skills (not me, that's for sure!!).

but some of these guys have some pretty big hills to whiz down and are bookin' some serious speeds....50+ on a pushbike!!...my bottle would go far sooner than my legs or gears at those speeds.

Astonishing

LOL - It's alright how fast these guys go - but can the brakes back it up when required ;) (Jealous? Moi? ;))

That 22mph was downhill though, clinging on for dear life aswell ;) I guess it'll come with time though. 50+ though - I've had cars I wouldn't take that fast:biggrin:

Fair point. I do admire their bravery, and did not wish to diss them. I certainly could never ride at their speeds, even if it did not involve any work on the pedals. Naked fear sets in. All respect to them.

Thanks for the posts.

If I reached 40mph on my Brompton, I suspect I would embarrass myself by screaming like a little girl. I love the bike, but it is not designed for such high speeds, due to the wheels.

If pot-holes were non-existent however...
