Town or Country - which do you prefer?

Always lived in the city, would love to live in a seaside town (so long as it wasn't inbred)..

That's what I said to my wife and my sister. She ignored me

I live in a Devon seaside town (Exmouth) but grew to my mid-teens in Portsmouth.

I couldn't go back to city living now. I go to London a few times a year for work and within 48 hours I just feel grubby and hemmed in. Always a wee sigh of relief when I board the train home.

I can see the sea from my house and 5 minutes (literally) in the other direction on the bike and I'm in the countryside.

I commute into Exeter for work, about 30 mins by car, 45mins on the bike if I'm feeling energetic or 50 mins with a combination of bike and train.

The town has several takeaways of each sort (Chinese / Indian / Thai / Mexican) and of course endless chip shops / kebab type places.

There's not a great deal culture wise, but there's Exeter just up the road, Bristol about an hour or so up the motorway and Plymouth in the other direction under an hour away.

So in short, country please

I'm with you on that. Cambridge was horrible tonight, really bloomin' horrible. Choked with traffic, filthy and polluted, packed to the rim with crowds and moronic drivers. Makes coming back to a quiet place even sweeter.

Kind of depends on what the OP means by country.

I live on the edge of a small town. There is good sports and leisure facilities within walking distance. There is open countryside to the back of my house, with hills in the distance. Lovely villages for walking and cycling between, good choice of restaurants. I also have the absolutely quietest neighbours in the whole country.

Oxford and Cheltenham are within easy reach. I think I am staying here.

Thanks Glow worm, will pm you when next in area, but don't complain about Cambridge, it feels rural compared to other cities. I know, I know Newmarket rd is a pain and from Quy to Lode can be a bit hairy in the dark but I still miss Cambridge.

Both. I live in rural area within cycling distance of a town. I study cities, so I spend enough time in them without having to live in any one. If I had to chose one to live in though, it would be Tokyo.

Conversely, I live in a city within cycling distance of lovely countryside. I can hit mountain bike trails or the back roads of north Somerset in about 20 minutes. It's win/ win as far as I'm concerned.

I would hate to live in a city with huge urban sprawl - it would be too hard to escape for some fresh air and exercise.

Towns and cities every time. Can't get enough of them, loads of things to see and do, loads of people to mingle with.

Can't stand the country, the sooner it is levelled and concreted over the better.

I think that in place of 'Escape to the country', there should even be a program called, 'Escape to the town' to highlight all that is good about the town.

Countryside is full of dog poo and red faced people on horses.

Don't go there.

Yep Cambridge is normally OK agreed, just last night was a nightmare for some reason and the madness wasn't confined to hereabouts as others confirmed. Seemed OK tonight. BTW I normally avoid the Quy - Lode bit and go through Bottisham or along the old railway line from Fen Ditton to Lode.

Cambridge is still small enough to be able to escape from sharpish without much bother. Just a shame planners seem to be modelling all new development on Basildon.
