Are there any cycling tracks that you can book up and "have a go". At my age I've missed the boat on competitive cycling but always wanted to ride one of these tracks, just to say I've tried it. I am based in Stroud, Gloucester. I know there is a Bristol velodrome.

Newport is the place for - you can either hire the track for a private group - or they do "taster" sessions for newbies (with a qualified coach and hire of track bikes)

We've been about a dozen times to Newport (and Manchester but that's very hard to get a booking)

Great fun - but take plenty of water, you get a dry throat very quickly.

Thanks, its ok I've already emailed Newport. Unfortunately there are no free slots now before Xmas. They've been really busy since the Olympics.

They hire bikes with Keo pedals or clips and straps, but I don't think they have shoes. I keep an old pair with Keo plates just for the track.

Parking is adjacent.

I have been several times, and doubtless will be there again at some point.

I run SPD-SL pedals so my shoes won't work. Did you set a 250m time?

I know they supply the bike, helmet and gloves, but do they supply shoes.

Shoes need to be your own - but there is no issue with trainers + clips and straps. You will always be starting/stopping from the inside rail anyway, so plenty of things to hold onto so you can tighten your straps up before you move off.

Also, you really don't want to be wearing a borrowed helmet/gloves. It's a bit like wearing someone else's pants. I would strongly suggest bringing your own.
