Trans Pennines Trail discovery

Ive got the flu. But just wanted to share my joy at discovering the trail route to Liverpool from Warrington today. Great weather and a character building bout of gastroenteritis kept me on my toes for the last ten miles!

What with a trip along the waterfront with my sis and her brand new Giant Escape on arrival, I clocked in 36 miles on my trusty hard tail. She, 11.

Which way did you go ?
I live in Warrington and (t'other week) did Warrington>Runcorn>over bridge to Widnes>back via Sankey Canal (Penine Way).....27 miles.

It's a beautiful route on a sunny day.

West of the bridge it runs alongside the river to Pickerings Pasture, just short of Hale Village. Unfortunately the TPT sort of stops there, and if you want to carry on following it you have to go on-road and then through the middle of Speke

Now I am a psudo-scouser (originally from Wallasey)........but taking my nice shiny bike through the middle of Speke .
Is there really no other way ?

It was nice of the council to put in all the speed bumps in Speke to keep the joyriders entertained

If you leave the TPT through the car park at Pickerings Pasture, then head straight on at the crossroads you'll be on Hale Bank Road. Keep following that as it becomes Higher Road, and after a couple of miles the TPT crosses that road again at a Toucan crossing, where you can rejoin and carry on through Halewood Triangle Park and onto the old railway line.

Dave7, I abandoned the TPT after Hale (around John Lennon airport) because I couldn't understand the signage, but up till then it was pretty obvious, if not signed then just carry on straight on it seemed to work. I joined the A road to Aigburth which is actually where I wanted to be so it worked out well for me!

Potsy - sounds good - I'll have to check my diary but I don't think I have my little un that weekend - unlikely to join you at Altrincham, prob just hop on board at Warrington - I live by Knutsford Road swingbridge so quite easy to hook up...

And which bike will you be using? I took a hardtail.

ive done it a few times from liverpool to southport, it confused me at times, it could be better signposted. i found a way round that isnt the signed way but it seemed better for me and worked out well

i want to do it the opposite way one day, prob in the autumn when the weather turns, before then ill be on my roady mostly

if anyone fancies a ride from liverpool to warrington way, prob about 25 miles and then return just say and we can meet up

Nice one Stu, I'll be on my Tricross with nice comfy 35mm tyres, no grip though so hope it's been dry for a few days

i usually join at liverpool but live in st helens, does anyone know if theres a closer point to join? maybe widnes?

I've lived less than a mile from the TPT for years (Woodley/Romiley area near Stockport). Decided to look for it one afternoon with my son, as the local access is very near (about 3 years ago - bear in mind I'm in my 40's and have cycled in the area all my life).

Awesome.

You need a robust bike - i.e a road bike is useless near me, and a hybrid will have you walking short bits (so will most riders unless you are really bike fit). So nice, right by the Tame river, quiet, just nestling in between housing estates, you wouldn't know they were there.

I use the Woodley to Parrs Wood sections quite a lot in Winter - on the MTB with ICE tyres. Makes a good change. Down side is it can be quite boggy, but much of the surface is this sandy concrete crap in places that is no good for drive chains -so keep them clean.

Davidk, one can definitely join at widnes as I went past it at the weekend. Near the catalyst centre.

At some point I'd be happy to do your suggestion tho as I live in Warrington, it would make more sense if we each rode one half alone.. You from Liverpool to Warrington, me back home from liverpool.

I'll be on a rigid fork hybrid with 26 x 1.5 semi slicks. Fine assuming it's reasonably dry.
