Wow, that's tough. At least Ineos seemed to do the right thing:
"Last May, I hit rock bottom. I was completely stuck. I couldn't leave my apartment in Andorra; I could barely get out of bed. INEOS brought me home and put me in the care of a professional. There, I was diagnosed with depression."

For all the stick they get there have been quite a few instances where they have supported riders beyond what they were probably contractually obliged to do when they've been injured or had mental health issues (possibly the same for most other teams but I suspect not all).

I think that's a bag move for both. He's been there forever. He could probably do with getting some different experience.

Maybe he just likes it there. As you say, he's been there forever so he must like it to continue there after his riding career ends. I'm sure he'd have had other opportunities either with other teams or in the media. There's been a lot of changes behind the scenes in the last 12 months.

True enough, he has a young family, and potentially some of this work, perhaps plenty of it he could do from home anyway.

Suspect he wants a bit of reliable income for a few years, and nothing to stop him moving on elsewhere further down the line should he choose.
I think he would be an excellent commentator personally, and that can be done from anywhere.

Rumour has it Sir Jim offered him the United managers job....even G isn't that daft !

Seriously though good move for him for me,part of the furniture at Sky/Ineos and has had a class career there to.Im going to be more positive and think he'll do well.I think it's part of his act to be silly/daft about race tactics etc.Good on him and good luck.

I'm just trying to think of a team that rides Pinarello already and only has 29 riders on it's roster at this point in the season that could give him a hand up. Minimum wage for 4 months, help dialing in his bike the last few micro-watts, transport to Chronos des Nations. Would be handy if he knew the team a bit already and there was no language barrier or anything..... Any ideas?

(I do have questions about e.g. being in the testing pool as to what is feasible - has he got the necessary paperwork there, even for continental?)
