Hello, I got a Trek 1000 Apollo Series aluminium road bike off Freecycle last week.
It's a bit like this one : https://www.bing.com/images/search?view=detailV2&ccid=GovWESe4&id=2464A12DC1BDCDB361375F79BDB2B25A2122D040&thid=OIP.GovWESe4H4eVKuCIvkPLZQHaFj&mediaurl=http://www.semesh.com/houston/ads/images/28/f00d0d_6kK6M1SLJQj_600x450.jpg&exph=450&expw=600&q=Trek+1000+Alpha+Custom+Aluminum&simid=607987537384509331&selectedIndex=2&ajaxhist=0

All it needed was a couple of new inner tubes which I got done and it was ready to ride home. I've been using it to ride to and from work all week. It's a brilliant bike.
The only problem is that it won't change gear. The gear shifters are little levers located on the brake hoods and I don't even know what they're called.
The gear it's set in is fine for me to ride but it'd be nice to have the option of changing them if I wanted to.
Does anyone here have any idea of how to get them going again?
The derallieurs look fine to me, not bent or clogged or anything and I've given them a drink of WD40 and 3in1.

Is it that the gear changers (inward movement of brake lever & downward movement of small inner button/lever) don’t work or do you just not know how to change gear?

Edit - pretty sure they will be Shimano Sora shifters on this bike from about 2001.

Well I know how to change gear but not with these gears and I'm not sure if I can post pictures. But the gear and brake combination is like this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Trek-Alp...h=item214a74c9a1:g:F7kAAOSwlxxbzGrC:rk:3:pf:0 In fact that is a picture of what the bike I have looks like except the peadals as mine are plastic.

Have you tried moving the main brake lever inwards, as suggested above? You then use the small buttons to take the derallieurs the other way.
