Yeah, unfortunately nobody's perfect... although it's still potentially shocking to observe someone you generally consider to be sane and well-rounded behave in a manner you find totally baffling / abhorrent.

Putting a new back wheel on, i realised that my 4mm freehub spacer was far too wide and i needed a 2.5mm spacer instead. Had a look on Ebay and there were plenty for a few quid, but i wanted one today instead of in three days time so I embarked on a tour of the local bike shops. The Edge was closed. Halfords didn't stock them. Smalley's I'm sure would have stocked them but they didn't have any either. On Yer Bike is a fair trek on foot and they didn't have any. Grrr! Three bike shops in a row not having a basic part and a two mile walk. No wonder we all source our spares on line these days

The last shop in town is Leisure Lakes so i backtracked to the top of town and asked there. The guy gave me a 2.5mm spacer and when i asked the price, he said "Just have it mate"... which was nice.

Buying a 2.5 mm spacer should be trivial but Monty was annoyed beyond expectations that it was so hard to find an open shop with one in stock! :okay:

I was alluding to the win of free spacers!

I know that there is a Premium Bond win (or not) thread but didn't realise that there is a winning bike spares thread!

I had a very similar experience on one of the Humber Bridge forum rides...

I went back into the shop and found that the owner had fixed my loose transmission for me. He had used a very thin extra spacer to give the locking something to bite against. Apparently, I'd had the lockring done up as far as it would go so as soon as the spacers wore down a smidge, the ring had loosened. I'm fairly sure that the splines on the freehub would eventually have been damaged by the sprocket flopping about. Anyway, the noise had been driving me mad so it was great to have the sprocket firmly in place again.

I asked the owner how much the repair would set me back and he replied 'no charge'! So, a HUGE thanks to the excellent Vive le Vélo in North Ferriby, near Hull. If you live in the area, or are passing through, be sure to drop in. They are friendly and helpful, and have some lovely-looking bikes and lots of parts and clothing for sale.

aye, that was the cherry on the turd.

Downside is... i think i needed 2mm instead of a 2.5mm. The chain is skipping about like crazy on the smallest sprocket and no amount of adjustment on the derailleur* will stop it... so i might have to humbly pop back in tomorrow.

*that's a trivial spelling that annoys me beyond all expectations. Two letters too many!
