One of them was removing the engine of a car at the top of a hill, freewheeling it into a garage at the bottom, and asking a mechanic to have a look under the bonnet because it wasn't running well. The show was Candid Camera. The UK version featured various people but I think that prank was done by Jonathan Routh.

I was thinking of David Nixon. He always looked as though he was about to burst out into giggles as he described his latest wheeze. There was one show where they invited a carpenter to build a few shelves into an alcove. The poor chippy didn't know that the alcove was part of a set. The width of the alcove could be secretly adjusted. It was a lot less cruel than some of the more recent shows of the same genre, but still a bit naughty for the time.
