Dunno about that. My mate was in a collision last month, smashed his helmet and his collar bone but not his head. We were both happy with the results of the experiment :-)

How is a helmet supposed to protect the head (what mechanism)? While we are on the subject, how does a helmet that has cracked actually do the job it is supposed to do?

Thirdly, what is the tested effective impact?

This is partly why I don't ride deep into winter, when the black ice sets in. Even if you don't slip (probably achieved through ice tyres), you can't guarantee that no-one else will.

The cracked helmet is cracked because it has done its job, though. It breaks because it absorbs the energy transferred from the impact (instead of the skull absorbing it). The only thing is that beyond that point, the skull then takes the remainder of the hit, which could be a lot or a little depending on the crash.
