Type of bike i need?

I want a bike that will be good on both road and on off road style roads(grass, stones and some muddy)so a mountain bike.

and will be able to reach some good speeds when going along roads easily. and overall good and look quite good(bulky being better)??
what bikes would you recomend between 300-450 i live in newcastle if it makes any difrence

You have to bear in mind that a perfect bike for all terrains does not exist, any bike is a compromise.

If the off road sections you wish to cycle are reasonably surfaced (albeit rough) then a hybrid is the way to go. However if you are talking of seriously rough stuff, then only a mountain bike will suffice.

You then have the problem that a mountain bike will be hard work and relatively slow on the road. But a road bike would be totally unsuitable for any rough stuff. Geddit?

+1 what HJ says but budget might have to stretch, though it would be worth it in the long run/cycle
