@glasgowcyclist, it would be worth confirming with kia over Bluetooth connection on your niro. I'll reach out to someone i know who has a niro as im sure your phone should connect. Just remembered Kia cars also have WiFi connection as well. A bit of googling suggests re- Pairing the phone to the car.

This should be right, I got a new van from work and I play music from my iPhone via bluetooth (Apple Car Play) & my work android phone connects via Wi-fi for the Android Auto function.
Edit: If your phone has the ability to install an SD Card, why not download your music on to the SD Card, put the SD card into the phone, and connect the phone via USB Cable, an SD card is as as cheap as chips nowadays, see below 256 GB will hold a whole lot of music.

I am only using the basic Samsung Music app and the only thing I can control from the steering wheel buttons is the volume. I need to start it playing before I set off.

I want to be able to skip tracks forward/back etc from the steering wheel. I can do that when using a USB stick, not when bluetoothing from the phone.

To be honest, If that's the case you will have to get an iPhone, that will do that, to be honest that infotainment system is a chocolate tea pot, my 2017 Suzuki Swift will do all that on either Android or Apple Car Play, the Kia isn't fit for purpose, or just use a USB cable with an SD Card in your phone, it looks like that is the only way, despite not wanting a cable connection, it seems it's that, or nothing.

If you read the second part, that's what I said, I read earlier as it would work with Apple, however it looks like KIA's Infotainment system is a complete & utter chocolate teapot, It's cables or nothing, which imho is wholly unacceptable in a new car, and is not fit for purpose, other manufacturers can manage it, why can't KIA, oh that's right, penny pinching

Since I’m not shelling out £100 to test if a separately powered USB hub will indeed work, I’ve settled on leaving the AA dongle connected, and using Spotify to access the music files stored on my phone and bluetooth them to the infotainment system. I’ll use the touch screen controls, or get my wife to do it when she’s out with me.

Have you tried loading your music onto the phone and using the local file feature in Spotify to play the music? Your steering wheel controls may be able to control Spotify.

I read many years ago that when Ford first launched the Fiesta (Yes - That long ago!) that when the made the first designs and prototypes there was a delay

They spent a huge amount of money to fix a problem
The steering wheel coast 50p too much to make
Just 50p - but they were prepared to delay the whole project until it was fixed

It was worth it - that 50p multiplied across every car made was worth millions

which is how they think

using less memory and a smaller processor in the computery thing that does the sound and stuff - which results in needing a smaller operating system with less adherence to standards - probably saves they a lot over time and manufacturing units

but means the USB system does work the way a USB system is supposed to

AKA - big business keeping an eye on its profits

I know going back a few yrs kia thought apple would take over the world for mobiles so they had apple play adapter thing supplied with the car. Thinking back to when I got my xceed in 23 it didn't play nicely as the original app planned was obsolete, im guessing its been upgraded both in car and on the app so its pretty seamless. Well it is on mine 🤫🤞
