Well tell him it kills people
Oh, don't be silly. It's other drivers that kill people, everybody knows that

Well tell him it kills people and change his attitude. I don't have the chance for most drivers passing me, but you do...do the right thing and educate him.

You can tell these that it kills people until you are blue in the face. But it will not change their attitudes one bit. They will not and don't want to be educated. All they hear is blah blah blah...
The Helmet Cam warriors who point out that some one is on a phone, yeah they put it down (sometimes), but you can bet your bottom dollar they will use it again couple of minutes later. The only way to stop this menace is a complete ban of mobile phone use in a car with a very hefty (points and a £1000+) fine.

Personally I think that penalty is a bit to lenient. It really should carry the same penalty as a DUI, 6 months in prison, years ban and/or a £5000 fine, if caught again within a 10 year period a 3 year ban. This is based on the fact that research shows that a driver using a mobile is more impaired than somebody who is DUI.

I mostly agree this would likely be the case if telling it to a driver that you don't know and are just 'telling off', but the target of the education I was referring to is iZap's stepfather. Maybe it would hit home a bit more coming from a family member, I know my parents no longer moan about cyclists in the middle of the road since I explained the risk from the door zone.

I'm not under the opinion that they will never use their phone again whilst driving. But without exposure of the issue, nothing will happen.

As you say, a better punishment is needed.

No doubt Gaz. Point I was making was that even with you chaps pointing put the error of their ways directly, it won't stop them using a phone.

I think that is a good point. Lets start crushing their 'precious' cars for speeding/no insurance/mobile phones/dangerous driving. Then we might see a reduction in congestion and bad driving in one fail swoop.

I understand why police in cars or on foot find it hard to enforce this law but I don't understand why don't they have a section to monitor CCTV cameras facing the traffic and send out penalty notices? You wouldnt even need Police or PCSOs to check the footage initially.

No, rephrase that please. "it's unlikely", not that it wont.

Doing nothing WONT stop them using the phone.

Whereas saying something has that chance, no matter how small.

Granted if everyone started pointing fingers at these people it makes it more socially unacceptable (years ago people never really batted an eyelid at this - same for drink driving!).

Doing nothing is the problem.
