Varying lane widths

Interesting concept because the first thing it made me think...as a car driver..MY position in the road is deemed to have less priority than the cyclist, which would go a long way to re educating many selfish drivers.

I have posted an example up North that I can't find now, but basically where a standard width road has the centre lines erased and two cycle lanes painted instead. I think it looked really good and made it clear that the road was for bikes with motorists secondary and sharing that space. However, other's didn't like the idea of encouraging people to drive in cycle lanes.

I'm not sure the variable widths are helpful though, just a bit gimmicky.

I guess it also takes a while to get used to. A road near me has recently been remarked with wider cycle lanes and narrower lanes for vehicles, but I have had some really nasty passes along there since then (moving over to the left back into where the lanes used to be). I suppose from some thick-skulled motorists thinking that cyclists are taking "their" space.

That's worse than the one I posted. I think our best option for these is to claim the lane, aka take primary position, and to hell with any motorists who get a few seconds added to their commute. Our lives are more important than their convenience.
The problem is it is a wide, straight road and you run the risk of taking primary just as someone else decides to floor it past you before the island. That's before the fact that many, perhaps most, cyclists either don't understand or don't feel confident taking primary.
that sort of reminds me of the old A1 in Northumberland that had to be most dangerous road I have ever driven on. A south bound lane, a north bound lane and a shared overtaking lane in the middle - the carnage was unbelievable, people used to just drive towards each other flat out in the overtaking lane that they thought belonged to them. It was a good idea but the idiocy of drivers meant it just made things worse. I suspect this would have the same affect, a lot of people seem to loose their marbles when they sit in the drivers seat.
A lot of the A20 in Kent used to be like that, we used to call the middle lane the suicide lane
