I got up AdH on a 39 x 26 but would not recommend it; you need to spin gently for over an hour to find it bearable. It was much nicer on a 34x26; a Tiagra compact chainset costs peanuts, you know you want to..

anyone know a good, cheapish (or whatever) hotel in bedoin, maybe sault, somewhere to tackle the ventoux?

Hotel Crillon le Brave is nice, my once-rich wife tells me. It was too rich for my blood, so I slept in a nearby olive grove and rode up the hill next morning.
