Thanks all,
I was driving up the hill today and it struck me as being rather wide (hence I don't normally have an issue with close passes up this hill). I guess the cycle lane must be or very close to 1.5m wide, other than where there are lamp posts every 10 metres reducing it, something that used to worry me much more when I commuted by mountain bike with 700mm bars. The main carriageway itself is also plenty wide enough to allow a bike on either side and then a car on either side all to pass. Problems only seem to arise when you have inattentive drivers or silly bus drivers, and the walls on either side mean you have nowhere to escape to.
@Hawk - I really like your suggestion, but I don't know how it would go down with those that ride down the hill slowly.
It's a tricky one for me as I really appreciate the fact that so many people use public transport in Oxford so feel bad taking a primary up this hill and holding them up just in case some one wants to drive stupidly. I'm going to stick with being vigilant over reporting poor driving and hope that they remove the lamps posts from the lane. I've long lost hope of county planners ever thinking outside the box or doing something in the name of cyclists safety over that of not annoying drivers.
