Thanks all,
I was driving up the hill today and it struck me as being rather wide (hence I don't normally have an issue with close passes up this hill). I guess the cycle lane must be or very close to 1.5m wide, other than where there are lamp posts every 10 metres reducing it, something that used to worry me much more when I commuted by mountain bike with 700mm bars. The main carriageway itself is also plenty wide enough to allow a bike on either side and then a car on either side all to pass. Problems only seem to arise when you have inattentive drivers or silly bus drivers, and the walls on either side mean you have nowhere to escape to.

@Hawk - I really like your suggestion, but I don't know how it would go down with those that ride down the hill slowly.

It's a tricky one for me as I really appreciate the fact that so many people use public transport in Oxford so feel bad taking a primary up this hill and holding them up just in case some one wants to drive stupidly. I'm going to stick with being vigilant over reporting poor driving and hope that they remove the lamps posts from the lane. I've long lost hope of county planners ever thinking outside the box or doing something in the name of cyclists safety over that of not annoying drivers.

I wouldn't worry about it - you staying alive is more important than a bus trip taking a few extra seconds. Buses will still get stuck in the traffic further up once they have passed you anyway.

On a totally different note- is there still a house with a bloody great shark sticking out of its roof in Headington?

I haven't read the whole thread, but I have looked at the pictures of the road, and if I was driving a bus up that road there is NO WAY I would pass a cyclist in that cycle lane if there was a large vehicle coming the other way. There's far too little room for error, on anyone's part.

Indeed there is, I live almost opposite it. We now have two sharks in Headington as there is also one above the fish and chip shop!

Great stuff - good to know the shark's still there. A lesson to us all on the dangers of transporting big fish by helicopter using cheap rope!

the owner of the shark, who used to run the Penultimate Picture Palace had the most terrible trouble getting it through planning. You'd have thought that Oxford City Council would have given him an award......

Definately - I think its great. Every town should have at least one house with a massive animal sticking out of its roof. When I lived there about 20 years ago I was going through a catastrophic relationship breakdown and the shark was about the only thing that cheered me up! I have discovered it even has it's own Wikepedia entry.
