Not very regular work - but at election times there's a need for people to count and/or man the polling booths. Different counties seem to do it differently - some just seem to reallocate council staff but others take on temporary staff. As a very short term thing I enjoyed the couple of stints I did in 2024.

Are you near a university or college? Exam invigilators always needed, might be a touch pedestrian but pay not bad and very intermittent, you can pick your availability too.

Two of my school minibus driver colleagues do some invigilating at exam times. From what they say it's the most boring job ever.

There was a law brought in a few years ago - about 2015 I think - where your employer had to consider reasonable requests to change your working hours to part-time or whatever. I used it to change from 5 days a week to 3.

I did the same last year. Very happy with it so far, 15 months in.

That started two weeks before I hit state pension age at 66, my current intention is to carry on until I hit 70, then retire fully. And defer my state pension until then, which gives me an extra 40%, which together with the DC pensions I have should result in very little change of income when I do reture.

It doesn't sound like something I'd be any use at , wouldn't you have to be at least vaguely academic to be involved in something so important .

Not really. You are just making sure the examinees are all staying in their allocated space, not tlaking to each other, and no obvious cheating aids.

You don't need to know anything at all about the subject they are being examined on.

No. As mentioned above, it's about ensuring the rules are followed. My MiL often invigilates children who need extra time due to learning difficulties and finds it very rewarding. Sometimes they are allowed to have the questions read to them. Some exams are dull, others she really enjoys.

I did it in the first two years of retirement, and enjoyed it. It gave my mathematical mind quiet time to play. I started looking at the 150 odd students and counting what percentage had red hair, for example. After work I compared that with national averages.

Then I got onto the maths of the wobbly tables; why do three legged tables not wobble? On how many axes will a five legged table wobble?

I know. I'm weird, but I was getting paid while being weird.

My local council uses a bicycle courier firm to take documents etc round various local depots and satellite sites. Perhaps yours does the same?

I do one day a week at my local FLBS for trade prices on consumables and free access to its scrap yard.

I'm not sure what qualification requirements there are for telling the time, handing out paper and following people to the toilet. You might also need to administer and occasional shush.
