The criminalisation of certain drugs is why they kill people. I have known people who have died from illegal and legal drugs and the ones who have died from illegal drugs would still be here if they had been legal. The relative who died from cirrhosis of the liver is dead because alcohol when abused can be one of the most destructive of all drugs.
I don't condone drug use but I don't condem it either. If you want to take drugs why not, it should be personal choice, it would be nice though if they were all regulated rather than some criminalised and some socially acceptable. It would wipe out a large element of criminality and let people take regulated amounts rather than the Russian roulette that goes on with the status quo leaving many young impressionable people in their graves before their time.

I can't be arsed to read all that, could you condense it down to a brief and snappy sentence please?

You no can scan read?

Endorphins steer a lot of human behaviour. The word's a portmanteau, endogenous (meaning within) and morphine, meaning pain relief. We seek pleasure, release and relief. Cycling to the top of a mountain, hot sweaty sex, a latte and Danish, a joint, whatever. That's not to say there aren't problems, drugs are definitely NOT the answer. Drugs are the question. The answer's "Yes please".

There is a theory that certain psychiatric illnesses are ameliorated by cannabis, it's possible your friend's daughter's episode would have been worse without the drug. If the use of cannabis is definitely linked with mental illness then it's curious that while cannabis usage rates fluctuate a great deal, the number of people afflicted with a mental illness remains constant, around 2% of the population.

I've tried a certain substance on 3 occasions in the past and, thankfully, haven't become addicted to it. Alcohol's the drug that I have to keep a very careful eye on.

The article in the OP doesn't do anything for me; I read it and immediately thought 'what a load of cobblers'.

You only become addicted if you let yourself.

Yep, I agree with that. No danger of me becoming addicted to illegal substances

One of the daftest things I have read, for every helpless junkie/drug addict I know, there are several I know who accomplish a lot and are very successful in life. "What drugs can do" Using the word can, "drive a car and you can kill cyclists". Just stupid and most importantly ignorant in a broad sense.

While not explicitly stated, I interpreted the OP to mean hard drugs and that it's better not to get involved in the first place rather than try it, get addicted to it, then attempt to get off it, if you're lucky.

Does this include alcohol, too?

I've only smoked one cigarette in my life, usual schoolboy episode, but I can still remember the sensation of the nicotine decades later. I'm so pleased I never smoked another as I can all too easily imagine the power of the stuff. So to that extent it's true you only become addicted if you let yourself but once you are hooked it's another matter entirely.

Must admit I know little about the illegal stuff although I am inclined to think that making it illegal has simply changed the nature of the problem and escalated it in many ways.
