Hi

Wondering what people think of folding bike helmets ?

I've looked at a number and i'm settling on the Fend:

https://fend.io/

Seems like an elegant design and folds by about 50%
I like the vent proportions. I've heard supply can be a bit patchy as it's a start up - but seems improved in it's 2nd year.

I also like the Cairbull Find, but i can't find (hoho) anything on it at all:

I've considered and rejected:
Morpher, which folds flat but this vid has put me off:

Overade Plixi, because i wondered about the capactiy of the axles/ joints to survive a hit:

Others i rejected:
Brooks / Carerra
Closca / Fuga
Ftiier
Anything else still in development.

Advice and comments welcome...
cheers

Any joint will be a weak point in the product. Usually overcome by making the entire piece, not just the joint area, heavier.

thanks
Yes the Morpher apparently passes all the EU and US tests yet i don't see evidence of that standard in the video.
Which i why i created this thread - because i want some views on these folding helmets.

Why are you wanting a folding one in the first place?

To make one that takes up less storage space than a non-folding one, means the design will be heavier. How much is the weight difference?

How much ??
You can't put a price on safety!
How can you doubt the value of a product which has been thoroughly tested and recommended by those trusted independent safety organisations Vogue (“Poised to Be a Game Changer”), Wall Street Journal("Appealing to cyclists of every stripe”), CNN (“Convenience for commuters”) and New York magazine("Ingenious Design and Portability")?

Not entirely sure i need to explain why i want a folding helmet !!!
Cost: I agree - safety shouldn't be compromise by cost but folding helmets aren't budget options so i'm not so worried there.

Issues i want to understand more about:
1. Comfort: What makes a comfortable helmet ?
2. Solid vs vented: pros and cons for each ?
3. Chin straps and secure fit ?
4. Plastics or materials ?
So - how do these relate to impressions of folding helmets.

Why you should want a folding helmet was a genuine question. It will impact on the construction of the helmet. Hinges being a known weak point, resulting in over engineering, making the helmet heavier. It will place a limit on where the straps can be fitted, the vent placement.

If you do get one, where the plates join will act as vents. So you'll never get a solid folding helmet. All of the above will impact on the comfort, more noticeable on longer rides.

Hi
Well only yourself and now classic33 have asked the why Q.... so .....

I like the convenience of saving space. I'm going to be cycling on short urban rides or max leisure rides of 4 hrs. I live in a city with fairly good cycle lane network. I find full size helmets are bulky and get in the way when not being used and out and about. I understand folding helmets are relatively new but there are some wild and curious arrivals which challenge conventional thinking for example, the mentioned eco-helmet, Hedkayse and Park and Diamond are all new ways of thinking about head safety:

I'm taking a conservative approach tho, of targeting those that resemble trad helmets but i'm now wondering if i shouldn't try one of the more radical ones being designed. I guess i'm anxious they're not really tried and tested in actual on-road use enough to breed confidence.
