I've tried on lots of boots over the last week and ended up with the Salomon Quest 4d GTX which I bought from Cotswold. They were the comfiest boot I tried by some margin, but still seem to provide the ankle support I was looking for. They are now in a box to be handed to my wife who will wrap them up to go under the tree

.
What surprised me during the looking process was the different approach taken by the retailers. I wanted to support a local outdoor retailer, but he couldn't seem to care less, just asked what I wanted to try, what size, handed me the box and just walked off (I was the only customer in the shop at the time). Cotswold were the complete opposite, they spent a long time with me finding out about intended use, measuring my foot, watching me walk in the various boots that I tried. I really felt like they cared about getting the right boot for me and they gave an excellent service.
So I'm going to have happy feet and I can thoroughly recommend Cotswold's boot fitting service.
Edit - I knew there was something else....boot reviews are next to useless, you have to go and try them. In that respect it's similar to a bike saddle, so personal as to render most reviews pointless.
